The SAGE (Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization) Working Group on Vaccine Hesitancy defines vaccine hesitancy as “the delay in acceptance or refusal 1 of vaccination despite availability of vaccination services.” Vaccine hesitancy is a complex and context-specific area of public health, varying across time, place, person, and vaccines. Global estimates suggest that 1 in 5 children do not receive routine life-saving immunizations, and an estimated 1.5 million childhood deaths occur each year due to diseases that could have been prevented by vaccines that 1 already exist, according to WHO. Such is the impact of vaccine hesitancy on our health system, that WHO has declared it as one of the 10 biggest threats to global 2 health. In the context of vaccination, two groups of people have been recognized earlier, the provaxxers and the anti-vaxxers.
