The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) represents a vast and diverse body of
knowledge developed over thousands of years in India. It encompasses various
disciplines such as science, mathematics, medicine, agriculture, governance,
arts, architecture, and linguistics. Rooted in cultural traditions and philosophical
foundations, IKS emphasizes a holistic approach to life, integrating physical,
mental, and spiritual well-being.
This study explores the fundamental concepts of IKS, including its scope
from individual (micro) to universal (macro) levels, and traces its historical
development from ancient times to the 18th century. It highlights the traditional
education systems such as Gurukul, Pathashala, and ancient universities, which
focused on value-based and experiential learning. The impact of colonial
policies, particularly Macaulay’s education system, led to the decline of
indigenous knowledge, creating a need to revisit and revive these traditions.
The paper also examines key domains of IKS, including Ayurveda, alchemy,
mathematics, logic, governance (Arthashastra), aesthetics, town planning,
strategic studies, agriculture, linguistics, performing arts, and trade systems.
These domains demonstrate the scientific, systematic, and sustainable nature of
ancient Indian knowledge.
In the modern context, IKS offers valuable insights for sustainable development,
holistic health, ethical governance, and cultural preservation. Integrating
traditional wisdom with contemporary knowledge can contribute to building a
balanced, self-reliant, and globally relevant society.
