The health of teeth is determined by the integrity of the hard tissue as well as the activity of the pulp and periodontal tissues, which are responsible for delivering nutrients to the teeth. Neural crest cells are responsible for the formation of dental pulp. The proliferation and condensation of these cells result in the creation of the dental papilla, from which the mature pulp is generated. The adult pulp closely resembles embryonic connective tissue, including a layer of highly specialized cells called odontoblasts along its periphery. The dental pulp is a distinctive tissue due to its physical confinement, high incidence of sensory nerve innervation, and abundance of microcirculatory components.
