The word "angiosperm" means "flowering plant" in English. The term refers to an "enclosed seed" or "seed within a vessel." Angiosperms are characterised by the presence of an ovary, which encases the ovules in a protective sac. Flowers, of which the ovary is a component, are unique to angiosperms. The ovary and occasionally related tissues combine to form the fruit, which is another distinctive feature of angiosperms.
