It is the first and the foremost important step in the treatment and diagnosis of a patient. A correct diagnosis leads the dentist to a proper path of the treatment. It provides an insight into the nature of patient’s illness and his/her attitude. It is a planned professional conversation which enables the patient to communicate his/her symptoms and fears to the clinician and it is recorded in patients own words. It helps in developing a good rapport with the clinician and to gain trust and faith of the patient. A good clinician starts examining the patient when the patient walks into the clinic. ideally the case history should be recorded in a private room or the doctors room, so that the patient feels free of the anxiety of the dental operating room. The examination should be done in a consultation room where the patient is in a calm and friendly atmosphere. A proper clinical and radio graphical examination can reveal many other things in a particular case thus helping us to provide a good periodontal health and functional occlusion to the patient.
