Salivary glands are modified epithelial structures of the oral cavity that are specialized to secrete saliva. They are specialized secretory apparatus and arise from ectoderm of oral cavity and are comparable to other ectodermal derivatives such as sebaceous and mammary glands. The human salivary gland consists of three major salivary glands and numerous minor salivary glands.9 The three major salivary glands are parotid, submandibular, and sublingual and they are located outside the oral cavity, with extended duct systems through which the gland secretions reach the mouth. Numerous smaller minor salivary glands are located in various parts of the oral cavity – the labial, lingual, palatal, buccal, glossopalatine and retro molar glands- typically located in the sub mucosal layer directly onto the mucosal surface
