Malnutrition has long been associated with poor clinical outcomes, particularly in
developing countries where its prevalence is alarmingly high. The compounding
effects of malnutrition and disease processes in these regions exacerbate the
health challenges faced by vulnerable populations, making early nutritional
1
support crucial. Among the various methods of nutritional support, the enteral
route is generally preferred for patients with a functional gastrointestinal (GI)
tract. Evidence suggests that critically ill patients receiving parenteral nutrition
2
experience longer hospital stays and have a higher risk of sepsis. Additionally,
complications such as villi flattening, mucosal thinning, and bacterial
translocation from the gut lumen into the systemic circulation can occur, leading
to the activation of various inflammatory mediators. These issues underscore the
importance of nutrients in the GI lumen to maintain normal mucosal function and
integrity
