Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), also known as compressive neuropathy, is
characterized by symptoms that damage the median nerve at the wrist level,
accounting for 90% of all peripheral entrapment neuropathies (1). The tunnel
outlet under the flexor retinaculum roof and the hamulus of the hamate are the two
principal compression sites. Compression can occur as a result of increased
compartmental pressure in the carpal tunnel, with the most common mechanism
being hypertrophy of the synovial tissue that surrounds the forearm's extrinsic
tendons (2). The most common causes of CTS include overuse / repeated trauma,
as well as chronic incorrect hand or wrist position during occupational
responsibilities. Trigger points are more often than anatomical or structural
anomalies to produce Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Flexors and extensors of the
wrist, Upper Trapezius, Infraspinatus, and Pronator Teres are the key trigger
points to watch out for (3).
