T he Word “Anaesthesia” is derived from the Greek word meaning insensible or without feeling. The word “Anaesthesia” had been used long before and it appeared first in the Encyclopedia Brittanica (published in Edinburg in 1771) .The American society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) defines general anaesthesia as “reversible drug induced loss of consciousness during which patients are not arousable even by painful stimulation”. 1 It is a reversible triad of hypnosis, analgesia and abolition of reflex activity. Fundamental component of general anaesthesia is unconsciousness and subsequent amnesia but many patients who underwent general anaesthesia reported intraoperative awareness.2
