I was born in Bhilainagar, present state of Chhattisgarh. I did my schooling in the Bhilai steel plant Primary school just opposite our house in Sector 10. Our school teachers have been very important influences in my life not only in the school but even to the present day. My Class Teacher, Ms. Bhagoliwala with her unmatchable patience and sense of humor, patiently coaxing a highly reluctant student like me and exhorting me with endless encouragement to study with concentration and be responsive and be confident while giving answers was an institution by herself in the art of teaching. My elder sister Ms. Sundari Krishnamurthy (Presently retired Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Avadi) was at that time, my main teacher in the house and used to encourage me to become a voracious user of the dictionary. She also used to display enormous patience in dealing with a lazy me(her only student at that time), making me study to her heart's content. The influence of my English teacher in Visakha Valley School, Ms. P Simon, was particularly singular in inspiring me to improve my English language. In her words, “we have to improve our vocabulary so that we would not get flabbergasted by the use of bombastic words”. Such words and language used to be highly impressive for little minds like mine and would instigate an inquisitive me to dive into the dictionary to know the meaning of those words.
