"Introduction to Medical Anthropology: Its Scope and Relevance" explores the dynamic interplay between culture, society, and health. It introduces the key scope and concepts of Medical Anthropology; including health, disease, illness, and sickness, while emphasizing sociocultural and environmental influences. The book examines Ethnomedicine, highlighting indigenous healing traditions in India and the North-East, the role of traditional healers, and cultural perspectives on mental health, including ethnopsychiatry and culture-bound disorders. It further explores Medical Pluralism, analyzing the coexistence of diverse healthcare systems such as AYUSH, Naturopathy, and Integrative Medicine within India's medical landscape. The final section, Practicing Medical Anthropology, addresses its applications in public health, epidemiology, and Indian health policies, while critically examining issues like health system resistance, commercialization, consumerism, globalization, and the impact of COVID-19. By integrating theoretical insights with practical case studies, this book serves as an essential resource for students, educators, and researchers in Medical Anthropology and public health.
