The discomfort in the mid-shaft and distal end of the tibia caused by shin splints or
tibial periostitis also known as medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), is
frequently induced by participating in sports or other strenuous activities (1).
Although MTSS is normally benign, it can progress to chronicity and be
burdensome. In persons who are subjected to recurrent tension in their lower
limbs, edema in the bone marrow is a symptom commonly seen in bone
remodelling caused by overload. When the load surpasses a particular threshold,
this may result in clinical signs and symptoms owing to microscopic tiredness
(microlesions), as stated in the mechanistic model (1). Periostitis is the
inflammation caused by muscle fiber rupture at the muscle-bone junction. With a
prevalence of 9.5% and an incidence rate ranging from 13.6% to 20.2%, it can be a
severe injury among long-distance runners (2).
