Native trees are those species that are indigenous to their habitats and occur
naturally. They have evolved in a specific region or ecosystem over thousands of
years and are an integral part of a localized environment. They are often confused
with the old trees or trees that are present commonly in a particular region or
locality. Adaptations to different environmental conditions, makes them well
suited to thrive without human intervention. Numerous ecological benefits such
as wildlife habitats, soil and water regulation, carbon sequestration, biodiversity
conservation along with overall contributing to health, resilience and
functionality of the ecosystem are bestowed (Arcos-LeBert et al 2021, Escobedo
et al 2011). More than half of the city's 29.75 lakhs trees population are exotic trees
based on census data provided by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
