The organisation of this book entitled “Efficacy of Herbal Extracts against Leishmaina donovani” is original and different from the previous research to the best of my knowledge. The severe toxicity, exorbitant cost and the emerging resistance of Leishmania donovani against most of the currently used synthetic drugs led to the urgent for exploiting some other new plant derivatives to treat kala-azar. Investigation on 11 plants led to the selection of 5 plant extracts as potent leishmanial agents, while three are moderate and three are with very poor efficacy. It reports 100% inhibition of parasites by Aloe vera, Piper nigrum and Withania somnifera at 0.5mg/ ml concentration at 48 hours of exposure. The selected plant extracts have also been evaluated alone or along with fixed Ld antigen or in combination with purified 19kDa protein for the production of reactive nitrogen species – nitric acid (an odd electron species that acts as reactive radical with antileishmanial activity) by infected macrophages. Aloe vera along with 19kDa protein recorded maximum (1528.0 M/ml) production of nitric acid. In combined treatment, plant extracts accelerate the production of nitric acid more than that of the Ld and extract alone and can be considered as adjuvant or synergist for leishmanicidal activity.
