Ageing is a process of deterioration in a person’s functional capacity as the body undergoes structural changes with increasing age. Healthy ageing results from developing and maintaining functional ability of the body for well-being in older age. India has named with the label of ‘ageing nation’ with approximately one-tenth of its population older than 60 years. Health experts’ stress on maintaining good health in entire life could help elder men and women to lead a productive life and remain resourceful for their families and communities. Ageing causes a general decline in the health of the elderly, which means they need support for their well-being, active daily living and moving in social environments. The concept of well-being is usually assessed by an individual’s overall perceived quality of life. The neighbourhood environment has a significant impact on the well-being of the elderly. Previous studies have shown that poor neighbourhood can pose difficulty in obtaining support and also the physical and social environments in which the elderly live have an influence on their mental health.
