For the last century, poor motor coordination in children has long been considered a developmental issue. The aforementioned children were labeled "clumsy" as early as 1937 (1). Since then, phrases like "motorically awkward," "motor impaired," and "physically awkward" have been used to describe these youngsters, as well as "developmental apraxia" and "perceptual-motor difficulties" to define this developmental condition (2), (3). The term "developmental coordination disorder" (DCD) has been used to characterize the state of children with motor incoordination since the 1994 International Consensus Conference on Children and Clumsiness (4).
