Oesophageal and gastric cancers are both common and deadly. Patients present most often after disease progression and survival is therefore poor. With more than 1.5 million new cases estimated in 2018, gastric cancer (GC) and oesophageal cancer belong to the most diagnosed malignancies worldwide. [1,2] Both are associated with a high disease-related mortality, resulting in close to 1.3 million deaths in the same year. [1-3] Given their anatomic proximity, both sites share a number of risk factors and epidemiological features, but also display distinct geographical and temporal patterns in incidence. Differences in the distribution of tumour subtypes across populations have been found to partly explain these differentials in the burden from GC and oesophageal cancer (OC). [4,5] Continued intensive studies are necessary to optimize treatment.
