The knee joint is the largest and most complex modified hinge synovial joint. In
the knee joint, there are three points of articulation: two are between the tibial and
femoral condyles, and the third is between the patella and femur (1,2). The
tibiofemoral joint, that articulates the tibia and femur, bears most of the body's
weight, whereas the patellofemoral joint, which connects the femur and patella,
allows for a frictionless transfer of forces generated by quadriceps femoris muscle
contraction over the knee (3,4). The complex knee joint has a considerable range
of movement during flexion and extension in the sagittal plane over the frontal
axis & varus and valgus rotation in the frontal plane over the sagittal axis (4).
