T he word "Botulus" in Latin means sausage. Botulism is a neuroparalytic illness which derives its name from the ingestion of spoiled sausage in Napoleonic times. Food-borne botulism and its clinical symptoms were first described by the German physician, Justinus Kerner during the period between 1817 to 1822. The potential for a therapeutic use for botulinum toxin was also first recognised by Justinus Kerner.
