The word “Biomimetics” is derived from the Latin words
“bios” which means life and “mimesis” which means to copy or mimic.
Biomimetics seeks to employ artificial methods to create materials that
mimic the structure of those produced by natural biological processes.
Ideally, the materials utilized for dental prosthetics should resemble the
tissues they are intended to substitute (such as enamel and dentin). The
structure of human enamel is nonhomogeneous in composition and
microstructure with a decrease in mechanical properties from the surface
(cusp tip or incisal edge) toward the dentin-enamel junction (DEJ).
