Vaccination against infectious diseases is one of the most time tested and cost effective interventions to prevent infectious diseases. Globally, there is a shift in vulnerability to infectious diseases from childhood to adult age groups as most of the countries have achieved sufficient immunization coverage against vaccine preventable diseases among the infants and under five children. This has resulted in higher level of morbidity and mortality related to vaccine preventable diseases among adults and elderly population. Waning immunity offered by the childhood vaccination, age related immunosenescence and lack of uniform strategies for adult vaccination are other factors contributing to surge in infectious diseases among adults. It is the era of increasing antimicrobial resistance,Prevention of infections becomes a very important strategy to combat the magnitude of the problem. One of the very important strategies to reduce the burden and impact of vaccine preventable diseases among adults is to expand immunization services to this population. Lamentably, there are no such focused efforts from the public health sector in India to provide vaccination services to this potentially vulnerable population. However, professional bodies like IAP, FOGSI and API have developed the guidelines for vaccination among adults, hence the awareness is necessary to expand the utility.
