The history of femora popliteal interventions started in 1964, when Sir
Charles Dotter performed a successful angioplasty on Laura Shaw, who
refused to get amputation done on her gangrenous toes. Sir Charles
Dotter used a teflon dilatation catheter for intervention and her foot was
saved [1].
The global increase in life expectancy over time has led to an increase in
ageing population. Further, increasing cases of diabetes mellitus and
tobacco use in various forms are important reasons for a rising number of
peripheral artery disease (PAD) cases. PAD is the third cause of morbidity
in the world following coronary artery disease and stroke [2]. A large
number of patients affected with PAD will have superficial femoral artery
(SFA) disease. Endovascular treatment option is preferred over surgical
bypass as it has low risk, less morbidity and mortality. A revolution in
endovascular technology over the years has improved clinical outcomes in
complex PAD; although unique anatomy and various hemodynamic &
mechanical forces acting on SFA make the endovascular treatment
challenging [2].
