T
he main goal of periodontal tissue engineering is to regenerate the supporting
tissues of the tooth. Tooth loss can be the result of trauma or periodontal
conditions, including gingivitis, periodontitis, or age-related tissue decay.
Periodontal tissue engineering strategies target two distinct goals, including
the formation of new alveolar bone and connective tissue (cementum and
periodontal ligament). If left untreated, periodontal disease invariably leads to
the loss of the tooth, and it has been estimated that about 10% of the global
population is affected by severe periodontitis [1]. Regenerative periodontal
therapies aim, ideally, at healing all the damaged periodontal tissues and
represent a significant clinical and societal challenge for the current ageing
population.[2]. Replacing teeth with titanium dental implants is now a common
procedure with a success rate of around 98%; however, it is still subject to
some termination. Tooth replacement by using titanium dental implants is
presently a routine procedure with a success rate of around 98%; however, it
still suffers from some terminations. In this respect, it cannot be overlooked
that the positive outcome of a titanium screw insertion basically depends on
the amount and quality of the patient’s alveolar bone which can support the
implant in the extraction site [3]; Therefore, developing appropriate strategies
for hard tissue regeneration is of utmost importance in dental surgery. In the
recent decades, the treatment of soft tissue defects has also gained increasing
attention in order to prevent advanced forms of periodontal injuries related to
mucogingival anomalies and better satisfy the aesthetic demands of patients
[4].
