Cyanobacteria play an important role in maintenance and build-up of soil fertility, consequently increasing rice growth and yield as a natural bio fertilizer (Song et al. 2005). They have frequently been the subject of investigation regarding the adverse effects of different environmental pollutants because of their importance as primary producers. In nature, cyanobacteria are subjected to a variety of stresses due to fluctuating environmental conditions. In response, they have developed elaborate protective mechanisms to ensure their survival.
