Oral cancer is the most common cancer and the main cause of death in countries. A
major factor in the poor prognosis over the years is that a significant proportion of
carcinomas are not diagnosed or treated until they are advanced. Delays in
diagnosis may be due to either patients (who may not report unusual oral features)
or healthcare professionals (who may not thoroughly investigate observed
lesions, especially asymptomatic lesions. A significant proportion of oral
carcinomas develop from malignant lesions such as leukoplakia and submucosal
fibrosis. Malignant oral lesions the purpose of recognizing lesions is to prevent
malignant transformation by initiating appropriate intervention.
