Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by an
irreversible obstruction, intractable dyspnea, decreased efficiency, acute
exacerbation episodes, and airflow restriction (1,2). Exacerbations of chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in patients are common and can lead to a
reduction in health conditions. When specific symptoms worsen or lung function
declines, exacerbations are typically diagnosed on clinical grounds (3,4). The
persistent restriction of airflow occurs by a combination of lung parenchyma
damage and small airway ailments. Over the next 20 years, it is anticipated that the
incidence of COPD will rise due to rising smoking rates, and by 2030, it is
estimated that there may be 4.5 million COPD-related deaths annually. Dyspnea
and a persistent cough that produces sputum are the primary symptoms (1).
