Albert Einstein quoted that “If bees disappear from the surface of the earth, man
would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination…
no more men!”. One third of our meal in daily plate is only because of bee
services. Bee keeping or apiculture is the scientific method of conservation
and rearing of bees for the production of important hive products such as
honey, beeswax, royal jelly, bee venom and the pollination of various crops.
Beekeeping is traditionally practiced in mountains, foothills, forest, agricultural
lands, mangrove forests, etc. There are five major species of honeybees in India.
T
hey are Rock bee, Indian bee, Small bee, Dammer bee and Italian bee. Italian
bee was introduced in India during 1880. Later on a sizable quantity of this
species was imported from 1920 to 1951 in the states of Maharashtra, Kerala,
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Punjab and Kashmir but initially none
succeeded. Apart from these five bee species, there are many more bee species
available in India but not in large numbers.
